Love Songs On Vinyl: Our Favourite Heart Shaped Records

A heart shaped vinyl record

Holly |

What's more fitting around Valentine's than a heart shaped record?

Most heart shaped records are 7" singles, but the extra bits of the disc will make it closer to the size of a 10".

There's a remarkable number of them out there - here are nine of our favourites.

All images are from Discogs

1 - Roland Rat Superstar - Love Me Tender

Released in 1984, this 7" heart picture disc features the legendary Roland Rat Superstar covering 'Love Me Tender' by Elvis Presley, and an original song on the B side called 'Pink Bucket Song.'

It also features keyboards by Errol The Hamster, vocals from Kevin The Gerbil (and Roland) and backing vocals by Glenis The Guinea Pig.

2 - The Supremes - Baby Love

Exclusively released for Record Store Day in 2012, this is a heart shaped version of 'Baby Love' by The Supremes.

The B side features an alternate take of 'Stop In The Name Of Love' which was previously unreleased on vinyl.  The red colour on this heart vinyl is translucent.

3 - Donna Summer - This Time I Know It's For Real

Another heart picture disc, this is one of the nicest shaped ones we've seen, with most heart shaped records taking on a more circular look.

This 7" features 'This Time I Know It's For Real' and 'Whatever Your Heart Desires' by Donna Summer and was released in 1989.

4 - Love - Lana Del Rey

The rarest one on this list, this record was released in 2017 by Lana Del Rey as an Urban Outfitters exclusive. It features 'Love' on the A side and 'Lust For Life' on the B side.

5000 copies were pressed and it has sold for up to £785 on Discogs!

5 - Tight Fit - Secret Heart

From the same album as their huge hit 'The Lion Sleeps Tonight,' this 7" single version of 'Secret Heart' by Tight Fit was released in 1982.

The heart shaped record also features 'Just A Moment Away' on the B side.

6 - Cliff Richard - Shooting From The Heart

One of the first heart shaped discs we ever came across, this one by Cliff Richard features 'Shooting From The Heart' and 'Small World,' and was released in 1984.

We have one of these for sale! You'll need to be quick though, as all of our records are second hand and therefore the only copy we've got.

7 - Neon Trees - Everybody Talks

Neon Trees released their indie rock classic 'Everybody Talks' on a heart shaped red disc in 2012, with 'Lessons In Love' on the B side.

It was released for Record Store Day and limited to 2000 copies.

8 - Motown Collaboration - Pops, We Love You

A collaboration between Motown artists Diana Ross, Marvin Gaye, Smokey Robinson and Stevie Wonder, this red heart disc was released in 1979.

The A side is 'Pops, We Love You' and the B features an instrumental version of the track.

9 - Suicidal Tendencies - I'll Hate You Better

Just a little less traditional than our other features, this purple heart shaped disc features four tracks by US thrash/hardcore band Suicidal Tendencies.

The track list includes 'I'll Hate You Better,' 'Mandatory Love Song,' 'Just Another Love Song' and 'Won't Fall In Love Today.'

Do you own any of these records, or is there another one you'd like to share?
