Our Comments: The Wailers' first album for Island and the record that carried them to the wider world - Chris Blackwell reworking the Kingston tapes into something richer, from 'Concrete Jungle' to 'Stir It Up'. Its real fame, though, is the packaging: the first pressings came in a die-cut sleeve shaped like a Zippo lighter, hinged so it flipped open, designed by Rod Dyer and so fiddly to hand-assemble that only around 20,000 were made before Island switched to the standard 'spliff' cover. Our copy is one of these Zippo sleeves in the later of the two variants; there's no Basing Street address under the Island logo on the rear, which places it just after the label moved premises in 1973 (matrices A-3 / B-4). The sleeve has some minor wear and creasing to the sleeve edges, but the sleeve is intact and the lighter hinge works perfectly.The record itself is remarkably shiny, suggesting this record has not been played a huge number of times. There is some quiet and inconsistent background noise caused by some very light hairline marks visible under a bright light. This copy is in lovely shape!
